I have four birds for competition. the food cost me $ 20 a year. if you super quality birds, you do not need 100 pigeons in the race, you need a bird for that win. . this is my opinion and my results speak for me ..........

That's a tough one Bob, not sure if there is a real cost cutter when it comes to the birds.
First I would have to say is keep your numbers down, it is easy to have them get out of hand.
I mix my own feeds, I use every grain I can find, it is alot cheaper if one buys the grains in 50 lb bags for mixing, but storage can become a problem, the other way is to buy your grains from your grocery store bulk section, but that can get costly.
I mix about 30% pigeon pellets into my mixes,(it does cut costs,) it has all the vitamins and minerals the pigeons need, but will give loose droppings, other then that, keep your pigeon numbers down.
Pay attention to your race results, I use Hawkeye Loft program, I enter all my races into the program, this helps me to determine what families are doing it and the ones that are slackers, over the years it has helped me cut back to half the birds I use to keep.
Hope this helps you out.
