In this video Dennis Weinreich of Hawkbait lofts shows us how he mixes feed for his breeders. He starts off with a 15% commercial pigeon feed mix that you can get at any feed supply and to that he adds…
- 1 cup Maple Peas
- 1 cup Safflower
- 1 cup 16% chicken pellets (helps to raise the protein content and also has lots of vitamins and minerals)
- 1 cup wild birdsees (it’s loaded with vitamins and minerals and is good for the birds coat as well as helping to raise the protein content)
- 1 cup organic rice (brown and white organic rice mix)
- 1 cup Spanish Peanuts (helps add fat to the feed which is good for the babies)
- Petimine (added a few times a week, rich in B vitamin and soy protein)
- Olive Oil (about 1 tablespoon)
This is a great feed mix for breeders rich in vitamins and minerals and high in protein to help the parents stay energized and the babies grow nice and strong.

Intresting…. what would be the overall protein, fat… and omega 6/3 ratio for this mix? The breeders have to be a little bit on the hungry side, not good in cold climate. Those pellets will be eaten last when the babies are already fed. Any leftovers may go rancid. My Friend feeds very similar tight budget and comes out cheaper and is a good flyer. Why worry For the few miligrams of vitamins that may be on those seeds? If You put one measuring tea spoon is 4000 mg. of what You want, baby powder formula, pigeon vitamins or other. I prefer no vitamins on feed, in water ACV avery day since November Few types of grit and and pick pots and the young are robust and already moulting fly really well. Hope this helps. God Bless.
hey guys feed mixed during breeding and condition for the breeders is good ang quality for the health of breders.. i like this post thanks for sharing this post verry informative!! during the race season i also add the (pili nuts) nuts oil this is verry effective for the health of pigeon racing fast recovery, build up for the muscle of pigeon. thanks
Look,I dont know what to add here?Everybody seems to have a feed mix thats supposed to breed the best young one’s.I just keep it simple and give the birds what they want.I’ve tried pigeon mix’s before and the birds pick out all the pea’s and then just play around with the rest. They know what there chicks need.I’ll mix up pea’s,wheat,a little maise, and chicken pellets.Dampen with oil,and powder with PVM (pink, vitamin, mineral).Give plenty of health grit, and garlic in the water one day and probiotics the next. The young one’s are great.
Good mixed of grains, but dificult to find some of them at home. But maybe there are alternatives of grain which is the same content of protein.
Did just about all that,’cept for the olive oil
thankes to you
do you have apigeon chat ????????????????

Interesting and makes sense to me Worth a try
when i had pigeons in 60s, we didnt feed all this feed thats out there today. we feed corn, commady rice, and anything they would eat. its like my friend gave me some rollers two months back. they are so inbred, they sre stuppied. he said feed them milo, wheat, this will make them roll better. got reed of them. so i say feed corn, wheat, yellowpeas, pellets.
hello
tanks is so good for me
hamed
Hello everyone, i need a good racing mix any good secrets out there thanks!
ok can you give copy thankz
The last few years we didnt use grain for breeding….we used the Nutriblend Purina Gold and Green…just follow the instructions on the bag…babys both years have come out fantastic.
I would never consider feeding wild bird seed to my pigeons, it contains all the crap top feed companies reject, basically it’s the sweeping off the floors.
My advice is keep it simple,I buy a good qaulity breeders mix contaning at least eight different grains, when I ring the babies I put in their box a small pot of maple peas preferably tasmainian as their the best,by all means also add a few peanuts to the mix, this does two things, it helps provide strong healty babies plus they get to know what peanuts are which helps them come to hand easier, but make sure you buy good qaulity peanuts, preferably the ones for human consumption.
plus I add to my feed three times a week garlic oil with brewers yeast added, with anti fungal and improver in the drinker. follow this guide and you will rear beutiful strong healthy babies,I would gaurantine you. enjoy your birds mike…
sir dennis what is petimine?is dog food for puppy is good for racing pigeon too?
sounds OK, but I am not too sure about the wild bird seed, I don’t use it myself. What I do is use the basic mix and watch what the breeders leave when feeding the youngsters, then take most of that out,and add what they want most, be it corn, peas etc.Remember the birds know what they want or need better than we do.We need to observe their needs more.I hope he is mixing this daily with the oil,so it doesn’t go sour on you.
terry
HI TERRY
I HAVE BEEN USING A WILD BIRD SEED THAT CONSISTS OF BLACK SUNFLOWER SEED, RED MILO, AND MILLET TO MY REGULAR COMMERCIAL 16% PIGEON MIX FOR MANY YEARS.. THE WILD BIRD SEED ALSO IS COATED WITH A VITAMIN MINERAL..I ALSO USE PURINA EGGINA LAYENA CHICKEN PELLETS.. AND MY BABIES ARE VERY HEALTHY.. I RAISED 150 YOUNG BIRDS THIS YEAR AND ALL WERE BIG FAT AND SASSY……. DENNIS
PS THE NAME OF THE WILD BIRD SEED IS CALLED PENNINGTONS…NOT SURE ALL WALMARTS CARRY IT OR NOT.
again what is petamine and from the description it sounds like you could do the same with brewers yeast and soy beans?????????
Its easier to buy feed at feed mill stores or some flyer’s that get their feed from pigeon feed companies and they sell it to other pigeon flyer’s.
I prefer to buy the feed I need for breeding and racing from pigeon feed supply then buy the craps from Wal-Mart and other chicken feed stores .
Guys don’t use commercial feed !
I agree, although the pellets work, chicken or turkey doesn’t matter.
Dr. Chalmers writes in articles on this site that maple peas have a compound that stops digestion of protein and should be no more than 5% of the mix and fed with cereal grains. Other peas donot have it and are ok to feed.
Thank You and the pigeons dont even like it
Just was at walmart for bird seed. read the labels and the warning said: Wild bird feeding only. do not eat, or feed to pets and pet birds. wash hands after filling feeders. There is feed from over seas and the usa that is treated with pesticide powder for storage and the processor did not polish and air clean the feed for pet consumption. It would increase to cost to walmart. The feed we are seeing now was harvested last year.
Add the oil before adding any powder. It sticks easier to the moistened feed.
Thanks again. We have enough problems with toxins and mold on corn and other seeds that is already in pigeon mixes. Check it out on this and other sites.

Happy Birthday!
For Chris F. and all lovers of the sport wonderful

Does anyone know a synonym for a European language
other than English
Which One
How much of the 15% commercial feed did he start with?
Thats what he started with was 15% base mix, then added other grains.
Yes he started with 15% base mix but… the 1st Terry is asking for the quantity of this base mix he started with – as in how many cups of base feed. I too had seen that there is no mention on the starting quantity of Base Mix – so if it is only 1 cup of base mix as compared to 6 cups of base mix then the entire formula is thrown off. The typed description of the mix also does not include a starting quantity of base mix.
