Glemser Tip: Breed Your Birds Early

Glemser Tip: Breed Your Birds Early

I get the birds to go down in mid November, those eggs are thrown away on the 25th of November.  Reason being, when you first put your breeders together, some people don’t have seperate pens to mate them in.  Then there are sometimes fights, and you never know who is jumping who.  By November 25th every pair is down, those eggs are destroyed.

I want the 1st round all to go down together, They all lay together and all hatch together. Your young ones are all the same age, never add young ones to them.  I start teaching them from the egg.  Everytime I feed the breeders, I blow a whistle. The young ones get to know this from the time they are in the egg.

This gives me control over the youngsters from day one till forever.  When you wean the younsters, you lock them out in the flypen after a few days.  From that day on whenever you feed you blow the whistle and the birds are all through the trap in seconds.  Even when you first let them out to settle them you will be amazed when you blow your whistle the babies atomatically come flying through the trap.

  1. I am in New Jersey USA. We have snow and cold weather but i have heated floors. You can use a pig warmer on the floor, its about 36×18 put that on the floor and the babys will all lay on it. Cover it with wood chips.

  2. I like the idea of early breeding and I also use the whistle. The only thing not mentioned in the article is where you are located. I’m in Northern Ontario Canada and I presume the weather and seasons in Australia are much different than where I am.

  3. Hi John i treat the firsts of Jan i pair the 14 to the 20 of feb is this enough time for the breeders
to adjust before breeding i use a four in one Brad.

  4. Muy bien Chris, buen consejo para empezar a buena edad con los pichones, no lo había considerado. Habrá que intentarlo. Saludos.

  5. Why destroy the first round eggs of which has the first seed of pure power and blizzards of energy? Makes no sence at all and never will. Glemser, if your first born must be killed how would you feel? Your very fist seed. Take A good look at your oldest and then your second child and see the vast difference in them in power and energy. Exactly the same goes for Pigeons and all other animals and people. The second point you make of blowing your whistle for feeding time is brilliant but your first point is 100% wrong.

  6. My Breeders go through an extreme medication program during this period of the first laid. Not all the eggs are fertiled because of the medications and vacinations that the birds get. It also is a very stressful time for the breeders. That is why I give them the month of November to get them calm and attached to their nest. My second round is actually my first round. They are all the same age. I get 40 babies that are all perfect, in every way. My next hatch is 40 more, all the same age and very robust. If you look at my record these so called 2nd rounders win futurities and top combines week after week. You wouldn’t give a pregnant woman all kinds af meds. & vaccines because of the damage it may cause to the baby, same principle applies to birds.

  7. Pigeons are very clever and can be trained to the whistle at any age,the younger the better for sure ,but you can still train old birds to respond to the whistle. You must get them under control using the barley, only feeding the exact quota per bird and no more, while blowing the whistle. They will learn very fast.My own birds can be circling over head, and when they hear me blow the whistle they drop and charge through the trap, because they know they will miss out if they are slow. You must be tough, the slow miss out. They will either learn or starve. But what do you want to keep?Racers or pets.
