In this video Dennis Weinreich of Hawkbait lofts shows us how he mixes feed for his breeders. He starts off with a 15% commercial pigeon feed mix that you can get at any feed supply and to that he adds…

  • 1 cup Maple Peas
  • 1 cup Safflower
  • 1 cup 16% chicken pellets (helps to raise the protein content and also has lots of vitamins and minerals)
  • 1 cup wild birdsees (it’s loaded with vitamins and minerals and is good for the birds coat as well as helping to raise the protein content)
  • 1 cup organic rice (brown and white organic rice mix)
  • 1 cup Spanish Peanuts (helps add fat to the feed which is good for the babies)
  • Petimine (added a few times a week, rich in B vitamin and soy protein)
  • Olive Oil (about 1 tablespoon)

This is a great feed mix for breeders rich in vitamins and minerals and high in protein to help the parents stay energized and the babies grow nice and strong.

  1. when i had pigeons in 60s, we didnt feed all this feed thats out there today. we feed corn, commady rice, and anything they would eat. its like my friend gave me some rollers two months back. they are so inbred, they sre stuppied. he said feed them milo, wheat, this will make them roll better. got reed of them. so i say feed corn, wheat, yellowpeas, pellets.

  2. The last few years we didnt use grain for breeding….we used the Nutriblend Purina Gold and Green…just follow the instructions on the bag…babys both years have come out fantastic.

  3. I would never consider feeding wild bird seed to my pigeons, it contains all the crap top feed companies reject, basically it’s the sweeping off the floors.
My advice is keep it simple,I buy a good qaulity breeders mix contaning at least eight different grains, when I ring the babies I put in their box a small pot of maple peas preferably tasmainian as their the best,by all means also add a few peanuts to the mix, this does two things, it helps provide strong healty babies plus they get to know what peanuts are which helps them come to hand easier, but make sure you buy good qaulity peanuts, preferably the ones for human consumption.
plus I add to my feed three times a week garlic oil with brewers yeast added, with anti fungal and improver in the drinker. follow this guide and you will rear beutiful strong healthy babies,I would gaurantine you. enjoy your birds mike…

  4. sounds OK, but I am not too sure about the wild bird seed, I don’t use it myself. What I do is use the basic mix and watch what the breeders leave when feeding the youngsters, then take most of that out,and add what they want most, be it corn, peas etc.Remember the birds know what they want or need better than we do.We need to observe their needs more.I hope he is mixing this daily with the oil,so it doesn’t go sour on you.

    1. HI TERRY

I HAVE BEEN USING A WILD BIRD SEED THAT CONSISTS OF BLACK SUNFLOWER SEED, RED MILO, AND MILLET TO MY REGULAR COMMERCIAL 16% PIGEON MIX FOR MANY YEARS.. THE WILD BIRD SEED ALSO IS COATED WITH A VITAMIN MINERAL..I ALSO USE PURINA EGGINA LAYENA CHICKEN PELLETS.. AND MY BABIES ARE VERY HEALTHY.. I RAISED 150 YOUNG BIRDS THIS YEAR AND ALL WERE BIG FAT AND SASSY……. DENNIS

PS THE NAME OF THE WILD BIRD SEED IS CALLED PENNINGTONS…NOT SURE ALL WALMARTS CARRY IT OR NOT.

  5. again what is petamine and from the description it sounds like you could do the same with brewers yeast and soy beans?????????
