Here’s an excellent video from Dr. John Lamberton, he gives us an overview of what to look for when evaluating our pigeons in our hands and how to pick the best racers possible.
Some key points to look for,
- Feel for bouyancy
- Feel for feather thickness and roundness of the wing
- Flat breast
- Feathers should be silky and smooth
- Wing should be proportionate to the body size of the pigeon
- Look for long thin flight feathers
- Vent should be against the keel bone and keel bone should be about the length of the inside of your fingers.
- Roundness of the head and wattle should be proportionate to the head
- Length of the arm bone
Lamberton Tip: handle birds who have raced well and take note of characteristics of those birds. Close your eyes when handling your birds or handle them at night so you get used to evaluating your birds with your hand.

Hi very good video in most cases this is true but the pigeons must have the genes and the heart
anyone that has been around pigeons for a long time knows that you can have pigeons with the
perfect body and wing etc and they can’t fly or breed you need to use the basket first and foremost
it never lies just like a good breeder they either have it or they don’t there is no in between.
Hey Matt, yes you can alot of fanciers use liter on the floors, you can also use grating or steel matting and even sand. It really comes down to personal preference as I have seen lofts with all types of flooring.
can you put litter.or some flooring agent on the floors of your coops?
I do not believe there is a person on this planet who can evaluate a pigeon’s racing ability by holding the bird in your hand….Mr. Basket is the only one who can measure the heart and guts of a pigeon on race day.
I liked that alot! Unless your a constant winner, and even if ya are, none of us “know” everything! Some have help from an expereanced flyer, others just get lucky! Either way, this is worth a listen.

Thanks for the video. My husband and I really enjoyed it and I wish that you would put more videos like this one up so people could see them and maybe have more of an eye experience rather than a bunch of reading. I enjoy reading but I also enjoy the videos. They help me to pick up on certain ideas that I can try with my birds and it is a lot more helpful for my husband to see videos rather than to set and read. Again I would like to say thanks.
so true hemant to many so called fanciers look at the paperwork first then look at the bird.

you should only take a look at the pigeons eye after you
are satisfied with its physique first!!!!
