The pigeon racing hobby is evolving , we have had young bird “madness” but with the amount of work involved, the young bird specialists are getting “burned out”. Old bird racing is a lot easier and more rewarding ! Flyers in Europe take it easy on the youngsters and let them mature for the races later in life ! I do the same in US !
hi Chris
the state of racing pigeon is in great decline, not sure why ,as its a great hobby
don’t know if cost of birds , loft bits , feeding is the problem ,
all i know i want to do this
i think its dying due to no young people getting in to it its too much money for loft products, way way too many hawk attacks i loose 3 to 4 birds most days, ile pack it in becase of hawks
Hi Chris i race here in Johannesburg SA. Ive been reading the blogs and unfortunatly i must say that the pigeon sport is on the decline. And after being absent for a few years my son said last year he wants to race. We raced this year with only 35 birds, had 3 wins and always ended in the top ten. I hear everybody complaining that its a rich mans sport, but i believe its only as expensive as you make it. In my opinion keep less birds of better quality and you will not have to spend time and money on feeding and training the masses. Here by us the guys always breed hundreds and hope for a hit and that scares away novices when they see the masses and effort to keep birds. And i wish the old timers would be a bit more helpfull towards newcomers.
I’M veterinar i have experience with pigeon i have friends which they have a lot of pigeon i care about theyr pigeon
i live in kosova we have some race which they have origin from kosova they are very good race, they like too much europe
Hi Chris
I am from Paarl in the Western Cape, South Africa. This is my personal views i do not mean to bring our federation or organisation into disrepute. I must thank the office bearers of my union and federation and Board for their work.
I am starting pigeon racing again next year after an absence of almost ten years. I was at almost all the basketings and ringouts this year and i must state that the sport is not good for a beginner these days. Their are so much federation races in which a novice or beginner stands almost no chance. This means that a person who starts with racing can feel this is worth nothing to him because he cannot make a dent in the results sheets !!
I think their definitely needs to be more club races so that the novice stand a better chance because of fewer members competing !!
The way the social aspects of the clubs are organised is also a problem to me !! It seems to me that nothing is being done to attract the families of the members !! After the ringout everybody just leave !!!
I think a lot can be done to make the sport much more friendlier for novices/new starters and families !!

i think pigeon racing is a great sport to get out and have some fun right on !!!!!!
Hi Chris, I believe that the sport is definately on the decline. Although there are a number of reasons for it, the major factors are quite obviously finance, motivation by older fanciers when the younger guys are not winning, but also the fact that the sport are so splintered amongst the various different groups. I did a small survey the other day and found that fanciers these days are too quick to up and leave a union they belong to just becasue they maybe lose a vote for something they wanted instituted. In Cape Town in particular fanciers move back and forth between three different organisations that really does not benefit anybody. I also wrote an article on the Western Cape pigeon website begging the question about older fanciers rather dying with their secrets than being willing to share it with the young up and coming fanciers, thus creating stronger competition within clubs and unions and serving as motivation to the younger generation to improve their results and so keep them in the sport for many years to come.
just starting back in the sport after 20yrs after bumping into a old mate who after showing me a pair of jannsen stock birds he kept after leaving sport a couple yrs ago thought why not kids all left home more time to spend with birds in process of building loft then will be on look out for some late breds distance birds
hi would like to say that the state of the sport of racing pigeons is in decline as there is .no help out there especialey for young people as me & my son came back to the sport after a break of 10 yr,s wow what a shock we got the price of feed & club fee,s everything is money money when we came back we saved up for the new e t s system thinking this would be good for the welfare of my birds then bang the club had there a g m & they have put a charge of £20 to asign rings for old birds & £20 for young birds what a rip off that,s a extra £40 on top of every thing your,s in sport
