  1. There are just to many distractions for the kids and newer members, not to mention the greater cost. Also, several folks have commented on how some members just scream and holler at meeting, which is also discouraging to them. What we need to do is make it fun again, raise youngsters for beginners, cut the cost for beginners, act like gentlemen, quit the cussing an arguing and enjoy this GREAT hobby we have. If we are not careful, the only flying will be the one loft races.

    1. You hit the nail on the head Terry, I agree if we accommodate new flyers and stop bickering within the clubs the sport can have a great chance at thriving. Thanks for posting

  2. I think that space in the back yards is getting smaller if any.
the young generation are not being exposed to bird and animals as they were in the past.
They have other things to do without going out doors such as computer games, and the makers of the games con push there product better than we push pigeon racing.

  3. Hopefully we can keep this sport alive and family involved that’s what most important everyone would like to be able to have a barbaque & cold drinks to visit & learn so helpful info to win or at least get the old flyers to think the figure of this sport will stay alive after their gone that’s what important I think

  4. I think if the older flyers would be more willing to help we d have a better chance to keep this sport alive & help the new flyers out plus young or new flyers can t afford to buy the best bird’s to have a sporting chance serously 500:00 to 2500:00 for breeders why not help by shipping their older breeders to new flyers take a chance to give us a equally fair start if we raise young that’s great if not at least we had a chance to start with the best of the best and keep the sport alive

  5. What a wonderful sport, the pleasure of racing pigeons is that the hole family is there when the first pigeon arrive from the race and if this is all gone , that will be a terrible day for all of us, we neat to ensure that the young ones boys and girls stays entrusted, to this wonderful sport. there rest a big responsibility on the shoulder of the older pigeon fanciers to help the young stars of tomorrow to stay focused and stay interesting in our wonderful sport , I still belief there are a lot of pigeon fanciers out there that will return back to the sport if we can try to make the sport more affordable for everyone.

  6. Hi, Chris well my opinion is that in SA its a dying sport, our club have shrunk over the past couple of years from 60 – 70 active fanciers to only 17, with me the newest addition to the club in over 4 years, next year we are going to loose at least 3 old timers, currently I am considering building a loft to accommodate the three pensioners, to allow them to enjoy at least a couple years flying.

  7. Want to save the sport? 100 mile races from the same liberation with separate releases.

    A North A South

    B North B. South

    C North C. South

Three races, separate releases, 5 bird limit Total of 15 birds = 99% returns, affordable training and 1000% more fun and competition.

    Short Loft MA.

    1. On a second thought…

A North Hens (20 Min.) A South Hens

B North Cocks (20 Min.) B South Cocks

Flip of a coin who goes first, but at 100 miles? and after a few races the birds would come home like rockets in the rain!

  8. I’m from hawaii and have been flying pigeon for long time. But over a year ago I moved to the PHILIPPINES and I joined the pigeon racing club in the cavite area. And I must say the pigeon racing scene is GROWING with many members, age ranging from young adults to oldtimers. Although the only downside is the clocking system, we use cellphone to clock in the birds during race. But despite that the pigeon racing sport here is very tough and competitive the speed is 11 hundred yard/min. So that’s just my thought on the issue.

  9. I just finished reading an article on pigeon racing written on PETAs web site. They paint our sport in the same light as dog and cock fighting. They make it sound like it is only about gambling, drugs, killing pigeons etc. Organizations like this are going along way in helping our sport die. We have to fight back. We need to do a better job putting our sport out to the public in a good way. I know a lot of pigeon racers do not show birds, but I think everyone that lives in an area where there are show, should show. From local pigeon shows, to county and state fairs etc. Then be on hand with literature to give to kids and adults that ask questions about them. Might be surprised at the amount of interest is out there if the public could see us in a positive light. There are many ways in which we can promote this sport. We just have to get out of our loft to do it.
