Who Pigeon Fanciers REALLY are!

Hey all,

I have been reading many articles and news feeds ever since the news broke that Mike Tyson was getting his own show on animal planet about pigeon racing and I have noticed that some people have been bad mouthing the sport, pigeons and fanciers not to name names (PETA). They have been saying all sorts of things like pigeons are dirty, fanciers mistreat their birds, animal cruelty and so on and so forth. It’s obvious to me that they don’t know this sport and hobby at all nor do they know us fanciers.

So I figured who better to clear our name then US! we have a great group of fanciers here on the www.pigeonracingpigeon.com blog. So post your comments below and tell the rest of the world what pigeon racing really is all about and who we fanciers really are. Tell them how much you love your pigeons and how pigeon racing is a wholesome hobby that involves the entire family, promotes bonding and responsibility just to name a few.

So go ahead and post your comments here and let’s set them straight.

Thanks for your participation.
Yours in the sport,
-Chris

  1. frank :ONCE AGAIN THE PETA IS OUT TO CLAIM ANOTHER VICTORY AND IN MOST CASES ALL THEY WANT IS TO HAVE THEIR NAME IN PRINT. I AM SURE THERE ARE FLYERS THAT ARE NOT AS KEEN AND DO NOT PUT THE PROPER TIME AND RESPECT INTO THEIR BIRDS BUT IN 99 PERCENT OF THE CASES THE BIRDS ARE LOOKED AFTER WITH THE UTMOST RESPECT FOR THE BIRDS. WHEN YOU HAVE HAD THE BIRDS FOR 50 YEARS AS I HAVE HAD AND NEVER MISSED AYEAR OF RACING THERE IS TRUE LOVE OF THE SPORT THAT STARTED WHEN IWAS 11 YEARS OLD . IF THE KIDS OF TODAY WOULD EMBRACE SUCH A SPORT YOU MAY FIND WE WOULD HAVE LESS PROBLEMS WITH THE YOUTH OF TODAY . INSTEAD OF CONDEMMING THE SPORT THE GOVERMENT SHOULD LOOK AT SUPPORTING IT . IF THEY ALLOW THE PETA TO GET A HAND IN THE DOOR THEY MAY CREATE PROBLEMS FOR OUR GREAT SPORT. IN MOST CASES THE PEOPLE THAT ARE ALWAYS TRYING TO SHUT US DOWN HAVE NO IDEA THE DEPTH OF THE SPORT OF PIGEON RACING . THE PETA SEE ONE PROBLEM AND ARE WILLING TO CONDEM EVERYONE ,I HAVE ALWAYS SAID WHEN YOU ARE A PIGEON FLYER YOU HAVE TO TAKE 2 STEPS FORWARD AND ONE BACK. IT IS IMPORTANT FOR EACH AND EVERY FLYER TO EDUCATE HIS NEIGHBOURS AND TREAT THEM AS HE WOULD LIKE TO BE TREATED OTHERWISE ANY HEADLINES THAT THIS TYSON THING BRINGS OUT WILL ALSO GET THE ATTENTION OF ALL YOUR NEIGHBOURS GOOD AND BAD .I HOPE COOL HEADS PREVALE AND THIS TV PROGRAM CAN SHOW THE GOOD SIDE OF OUR SPORT

sorry i think its just another way for them to make the budget list they need money to keep the peta so they go around picking on us but did you know the are some of the people that are killing pigeons too!! out here in Cape Cod,Ma. they have crows that are feasting on eggs of some type of bird that is on the list of extition so they decide to put poision get eggs so the can kill they corws here is a qoute on the topic… SOUTH WELLFLEET — Federal biologists will implement their experimental plan this spring to poison crows and boost the region’s rare piping plover population.

But Seashore scientists also are considering a nonlethal option: placing already dead crows near plover nests to ward off live crows from eating plover eggs, said Cape Cod National Seashore Supt. George Price on Tuesday.

Crows are a primary predator of piping plovers in the Seashore, which, under federal law, must protect the small shorebird and its habitat. Seashore officials are considering the crow-poisoning plan as a way to increase the plover population, reduce plover monitoring costs and prevent beach closings.

The Seashore hosts about 90 pairs of plovers during the summer season.

The poisoning plan calls for scientists to place avicide-tainted chicken eggs in plover nesting areas that crows regularly monitor.

The pilot project will be from March through May at Duck Harbor and Bound Brook beaches in Wellfleet. U.S. Department of Agriculture scientists will handle the poison, with help from Seashore officials. The Seashore estimates that a dozen crows will die during the experiment.

Among the opponents is Provincetown resident Polly Burnell, who suggested the second option — using already-dead crows as deterrents — at a recent public meeting.

Burnell said yesterday she thinks poisoning the crows is “cruel” and that the avicide can harm owls. The owls could eat a crow after it has consumed the poison, she said. She learned on the Internet about the use of already-dead crows to protect terns in southern California. The dead crows could come from animal shelters, wild animal care centers or labs, she said.

“I understand completely why they need to do it, but I’m glad they’re thinking about alternatives,” said Burnell, adding that she has been in contact with Seashore scientist Robert Cook.

“It’s a great opportunity to try it out. I’m glad they’re following through on it.”

Price cautioned that the conditions in southern California are different from those in the Seashore. For example, the terns were surrounded by a chain-link fence to keep out other predators interested in eating the dead crows found at the nests, he said.

But Cook and his staff are looking into ways to mimic the southern California technique in the Seashore environment, he said.end qoute… so tell me do you think this is right they can choose what to do with nature???

  2. PETA’s Lame Response
We’ll say this much for PETA’s leaders: they’ve got an answer for everything. If you write to PETA and ask them about our “PETA Kills Animals” website, they’ll send back a form letter including some of the lame excuses below:

“Thank you for contacting PETA about the ‘PETA Kills Animals’ billboard and the accompanying promotions for it … PETA can’t afford billboards in Times Square, so we’re grateful for the opportunity that this one provides to discuss the animal overpopulation crisis.”

PETA’s lying. The organization has erected not one but two Times Square billboards (one in 1997 and another in 2003), both featuring silicone beauty Pamela Anderson. Click here and here to see PETA’s own promotional materials about these advertisements. And PETA’s annual budget is over $25 million. That’s about seven times what the Center for Consumer Freedom spends.

“We do not run a traditional shelter. In fact, we refer every healthy, cute, young animal we can to shelters.”

Uh oh. There they go again. In 2003 PETA reported transferring exactly one animal to another shelter. In 2002 PETA transferred just two animals. Click here to see the documents PETA filed with the state of Virginia. Since 1998, PETA has transferred a total of 130 animals to other shelters, and 21 of them were chickens. By comparison, it killed over 10,000 animals.

“[M]ost of the animals we receive are broken beings for whom euthanasia is, without a doubt, the most humane option.”

PETA kills 85 percent of the animals it takes in, and finds adoptive homes for just 14 percent. By contrast, the Norfolk SPCA, whose shelter is located less than 4 miles from PETA’s headquarters, found adoptive homes for 73 percent of its animals in 2003. It’s rather hard to believe that the animals entrusted to PETA are any more likely to be “broken beings.” Dana Cheek, the former (and most recent) director of the Norfolk SPCA, wrote to us recently:

I often receive phone calls from frantic people who have surrendered their pets to PETA with the understanding that PETA will “find them a good home.” Many of them are led to believe that the animals will be taken to a nearby shelter. Little do they know that the pets are killed in the PETA van before they even pull away from the pet owner’s home … PETA refuses to surrender animals they obtain to area shelters for rehoming. If only the celebrity “deep-pocket” donors on the west coast knew that their donations were going to kill adoptable cats and dogs here in Norfolk.
PETA talks a good game about caring for animals, but seems uninterested in saving the only creatures it actually has contact with. If PETA were sincere, it could use its incredible wealth to buy a huge plot of land where its thousands of victims could live out their natural lives. Instead, these animals meet PETA’s hypocrisy head-on, in the form of “tough love.”

  3. little something i bet all of us have went and posted in the the PETA site but we are not getting a chance to post anything good about the hobbie so i took it upon myself to write this to them i like to know what you think!!!
“with all do respect i like to know why I’ve posted a couple of comments on this “PETA” website and i have yet to see any of my post up!! i see that us “pigeons flyers, are not getting the chance to be hear on this site bet that if i was to post something negative about the sport you will post it. but since you know that we are caring pigeon fanciers, we dont get the chance to speak our mind. so where is the fairness of this debate???.. so why have a “Your comment is awaiting moderation.” and it not bad this we pigeon fanciers post!!

  4. well I have a big problem with peta and they attack any killing of animals How about abortion peta members are for that but any animal with no sole their for, however humans have soles. Whats wrong with their minds choosing animals over humans?????

    1. Great comment, Don. Some day I would like to see a survey among the animal rights wackos and see how many of them feel abortion is OK but killing animals for any reason is not.

  5. Peta is a covert movement supported by ill-informed do-gooders. They couldn`t care less about animals or birds. This is only a platform for promoting their hidden agendas. Wake up, people!!!

  6. well i think that we just ignore all this PETA thing and go about our own business…
that is raising and taking care of our beloved birds…. Let those people shout and they will shut up by themselves after a while……
In my India, there is a say…. Dogs bark and the Elephant walks ignoring them…
let us consider our selves as elephant and let the dogs bark…
